Retrieving Beirut is a cultural platform of the engaged art where artists and designers meet in an exchange of perceptions and ideas to re-discuss Beirut.
In light of that, its latest project, prompted by interior architect Donna Maria Feghaly and artist Charbel Samuel Aoun, deals with the absence of urban planning in Beirut, especially at its coast line, which concealed and denied access to the city’s greatest gem, the sea.
The installation titled “Saint Balech” (which translates to Saint Free) in reference to the long-gone 60’s era of thriving free beaches, displays a vertical architectural structure. Highlighting the reality that Beirut faces, the mazy ascending tower reflects the city’s lack of urban outline and the effort the citizens have to go through to get a glimpse of its dazzling sea.
